Lake Mahopac

Since the time of the Native Americans, this great lake provided sustainance and entertainment for every creature of the forest. The Algonquins understood the great power it beheld - and for many decades it was protected from the outside world. At last, in the late 17th century the growing encroachment could be fought no longer - and the lake was discovered, shown, and exploited by the outside world. Though much of its beauty has been stripped away - its bones remain as a reminder of the beauty we have the potential to create everyday.

Here you will need to touch the water.

Ice cream and pizza. Seems average, but there is no other locale on Earth which boasts the same convolusion of smells; sights; and sounds. They complement the flavor like strings of a symphony, and have ingrained themselves in the standalone flavors (great as they are) so each may be enjoyed fresh anywhere near the vicinity you take it. This is among the few challenges which are imperative to the hollistic Mahopac experience. Enjoy Carvel or Cacciatores and eat it within the vicinity. Add 50 for eating near or in the Gazebo.

The tower, a massive landmark whose purpose has been shrouded in mystery. Mystery to all of course, but the middleschoolers who knew it like a North Star visible in daylight, navigacable to those who understood its mystery. A beacon which signaled safe passage to the shortcuts in the woods and a hill with a view of beauty they had never seen before. Sadly, the elevation permits few without rigor to come here. We all know the spot. Any picture here will do.

Historic as it is, the Red Mills park often sits idle for the better part of the full year. A visitor would find, nestled among the learned trees, the storied gazebo, and the franchising bank, the 2 great rivers which join Kirk Lake to Mahopac. They once gave this town energy, and helped supply nourishment for American troops the first time they fought for our freedom. 250 years later, they can nourish you, too.

100 extra points are available for jumping over or venturing inside the river walls.

It is a difficult task, catching a worthy sunset in Mahopac without being front and center on the East side of the Lake. Luckily, there is, has, and always will be Lakeview. Officially an elementary school, in the time before the prominence of Crane road it served as a refuge for the skaters of this town - who favored its seclusion and granite ledges. Serendipidously, it is situated atop a great mountain overlooking the town. On some occasions, let it be known, they bore witness to canvas-ready colors people travel the whole world over to find.

A tribal meeting place, an architectural landmark, magnetic rocks and silver mines. What do these places have in common? Each of them can (or could once) be found on an island on Lake Mahopac. Canopus or Petre. If there is viking blood in you, by foot or by wind, you will have what it takes to sail here.

Once a mighty railroad used to ferry passengers from NYC to the hotels and summer bungalows that littered this town, the bikepath is an anthropologic remnant of days long passed. Although its structure has changed physically, it remains standing as a conduit of escape and a means of relief for those who use it to walk, run, and liesurley blade under the very same trees beheld to the eyes of the 20th century traveler upon first entering our then bucolic setting. Any picture between Stop and Shop and Mudpond Rd. in the daytime will do.

Kobu opened its doors in 2012, transforming a stark white building into the cultural hub it has become today. Since then, thousands of people have flocked to its doors looking to experience something just a little different than what the rest of Mahopac had to offer. Any picture within or beside the loyal dragons will suffice.

They probably would'nt want you here, which is why all you have to do is get a picture of the park. Crane road was once a tennis court, turned skatepark, turned dump on the brink of collapse; before the people you might see there today stepped in and saved it. Someday, there may very well be a documentary about it. Bonus 200 for being on a board here.

The bikepath is a great trail. Sadly, its use is "restricted" from dusk to dawn. Perhaps this was done for logistical reasons, for only those who are truly brave will have the fortitude to walk this path at night, and leave with their senses intact. Get a pic by wood post at the entrance, anywhere past Mudpond road before Carmel. In darkness.

The Mahopac Public Library (known colloquially as "MPL"), has for many residents been the great intermediary between their success and the primordial soup from which they have crawled. There are many great places to study here, and many great books to learn from. The greatest spot however, can be seen from the balcony on the 3rd floor. A picture here gets 100 points.

Lake MacGregor Ropeswing

Stand by the shores of Lake MacGregor and listen hard. If you're lucky, you might hear the echos of jovial screams and graceful dives from somewhere in the woods upriver. If you try to look for them, you will not find them. In 2015 a tree was cut down that once stood host to a great ropeswing. The tree, which once stood strong as a symbol against oppression and tyranny, is still there, drowning sadly in shambles by the shore. If you are able to find it, and the site of the late ropeswing, you would have 100 extra points.

I hate to say it, but this place is an important place to visit at least once, late in the depths, when noone but the survivors of the night are around to see you. I can't attest to the quality of the provisions, but when you're here, it's more about the experience anyway.

To get a feel of the culture of the inhabitants of a place, it is important to visit and experience what they do. Believe it or not, this barren desert is an important landmark for the people of Northeast Mahopac. The most noteable establishment is Paolo's, which some argue is best Pizza in Mahopac. Any pic near or within is worth 20 extra pts.

Sad but true, the final resting place for many nights is the parking lot adjacent to this establishment. A meeting place for the tired, the eager, and the confused, what happens here can at times be very fun, and at others spark serious reflection. Only the strong, mentally, physically, and spiritually, leave this place unscathed. The rest, are maimed irreversibly.

Travel carefully, and enjoy the hotcakes.
